How to Choose a Waterborne Polyurethane Dispersion for Industrial Glove Coatings

As global environmental regulations such as EU REACH and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 become increasingly stringent, traditional solvent-based PU systems face growing restrictions in protective glove manufacturing. With advantages such as low VOC emissions and no DMFa residue, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) emulsions are rapidly becoming a key choice for glove manufacturers transitioning from solvent-based to water-based systems.

However, during this transition, many glove manufacturers encounter technical problems such as unstable dipping baths, coating foam, fingertip delamination, and stiff hand feel. When selecting a waterborne polyurethane emulsion, R&D and purchasing teams should focus on the following factors.

1. Export Compliance: Addressing DMFa Residue and Odor

Product rejection is a major concern for exporters. Traditional solvent-based PU gloves may contain residual DMFa (dimethylformamide), which can cause shipments to fail inspections in European and North American markets.

How WPU helps: High-quality WPU emulsions use water as the dispersion medium and contain no intentionally added organic solvents. They can help glove manufacturers meet REACH SVHC screening requirements and other environmental standards.

Selection point: Choose an emulsion with relatively high solids content that does not require prolonged high-temperature drying. This helps reduce unpleasant odors and VOC emissions in the production workshop.

2. Production Process: Dipping-Bath Stability and Foam Control

An unstable dipping bath or excessive microfoam may result in pinholes, rough surfaces, or incomplete coating coverage.

Mechanical and Shear Stability

Pumping and continuous dipping generate strong shear forces. If the emulsion has poor mechanical stability, skin or gel particles may form in the dipping bath.

Defoaming and Wetting

Water-based systems have relatively high surface tension and can easily trap air. A suitable WPU emulsion should provide good foam release and rapidly wet 13-gauge or 15-gauge nylon and HPPE liners, reducing trapped air and pinholes around the fingertips.

3. Physical Properties: Balancing Tensile Strength, Adhesion, and Hand Feel

The comfort and durability of a glove are closely related to the molecular structure of the WPU resin.

Adhesion/peel strength Coating delamination from the fingertips or palm after repeated bending Select a modified WPU with active functional groups to improve physical anchoring and bonding with nylon or polyester liners
Softness and elasticity Stiff coating and hand fatigue after prolonged wear Select a polyether- or polyester-based WPU with a high soft-segment content for a soft, close-fitting feel
Abrasion resistance Premature coating wear under repeated friction Use a suitable crosslinking structure to improve abrasion resistance while maintaining elasticity

4. Cost and Efficiency: Drying Energy and High-Solids WPU

Many glove manufacturers are concerned about the slower drying speed and higher energy consumption of water-based coatings.

High solids content (>45%–50%): A lower water content can shorten drying time, reduce oven energy consumption, and increase production speed.

Low minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT): Complete film formation can be achieved without excessively high drying temperatures. This saves electricity or gas and helps prevent yellowing or deformation of the liner fibers.

5. Application FAQs for WPU Glove Emulsions

Q1: Can water-based PU gloves provide touchscreen functionality?

Yes. Water-based conductive materials, such as conductive polymers or carbon-based materials, can be added to the WPU formulation to produce touchscreen-compatible protective gloves with good sensitivity and abrasion resistance.

Q2: How can WPU glove coatings be prevented from becoming tacky under hot and humid conditions?

Choose a WPU emulsion with suitable crystallinity or improved hydrolysis resistance to enhance blocking resistance and durability under hot and humid conditions.
